Miami police increase patrols during holidays
The interim Miami police chief, who is on the short list of finalists for the permanent job of heading the police department, announces an increase in the number of Miami officers on the streets.
Interim Miami Police Chief Manuel Orosa spoke at an Allapattah shopping center Wednesday, announcing the addition of 30 officers to the streets during the holiday season and into the new year.
"By redeploying 30 officers back to patrol, we accomplish various things. We save money on overtime. There is a feeling of officer safety. There’s a feeling of community safety, and we have more visibility," Orosa said.
The renewed dedication to community policing came as the Justice Department continued to investigate a rash of police-involved shootings that have put a dark cloud over the department.
Orosa believes this part will be over soon.
"Basically, we haven’t changed any policies and procedures regarding the shootings since 2007. It’s whether or not they have been followed previously and whether or not any changes in the organization of the department has created these shootings," Orosa said.
Orosa is one of 10 finalists for the permanent job of chief, a list reduced from 71 applicants Nov. 17. In addition to Orosa, the finalists are Adam L. Burden, Thomas W. Cannon, Frank G. Fernandez, Michael J. Gugliotti, Rafael P. Hernandez Jr., Roberto Hylton, Amos Rojas Jr., Gerald Speziale and Louis A. Vega.
Mayor Tomas Regalado said there has been intensive selection process spearheaded by city manager.
"The chief of Miami-Dade police, the special agent in charge of (the Florida Department of Law Enforcement), they've gone through all the resumes. The manager will get five names from them, and he will decide," Regalado said.
